What is a Meta tag?

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide information about a web page for search engines and website visitors.

These items should be placed as tags in the <head> section of an HTML document. The first of these elements is Title, the Title tag.

What is the title tag?

Header tags are used to tell search engines and visitors what the most concise and accurate way of any page on your site is.

This title will appear in various parts of the web, including the tab in your web browser.

Your page will most likely be used when sharing your page on other websites and social media channels.

And most of all, your title tag will appear as a great blue link in search engine results.

Where is the title tag attached?

You can add a title tag in your site’s HTML code as follows. So it looks like something like this:

<Head>
<title> Example Title </ title>
</ Head>

However, in most content management systems (CMS), including WordPress, there is a title tag insert / edit box in the global settings.

Or, if you use a SEO plugin like Yoast, you can add a title tag to the ‘SEO title’ section and preview an example of how it will look on the search engine result pages.

When you write an article, the title section automatically creates the title tag.

If your title tag is generated automatically from the title, you should try to override it using an add-on (as mentioned above) or HTML. The title (also known as the h1 tag) is another opportunity to let Google know the content of your page using a slightly different keyword string, so you can take advantage of it.

Are title tags used as sorting signal?

According to Moz, title tags have long been considered one of the most important SEO elements on the page. And the closer the keyword is to the beginning of the header tag, the more likely it is to be sorted by that keyword.

How to create an SEO friendly title tag?

In terms of SEO, the title tag should contain all the keywords you want to sort. As mentioned above, the most important keyword should be the first one, followed by the second keyword and then your site name.

Moz suggests this handy form:

Primary Keyword – Secondary Keyword | Brand name

But the only thing you have to pay attention to is to write these titles first to attract people’s attention.

For search engines to be formatted to a certain extent, it is very important that the tag makes a great sense for people and reads like a legible sentence.

Title tag checklist

Length: Title tags must be 50-60 characters long including spaces.
Keyword placement: You need to create your title tag, with your most important keywords ahead, with less important words at the very end.
Brand name: Place your company / site name at the end of the title tag if it is not part of important keywords.
Do not duplicate title tags: It should be written differently for each page. Do not duplicate your title tags in bulk; this adversely affects your call visibility.
Make it relevant: Title tags must correctly define the content on the page.
Don’t tag keywords as ‘keywords’: keyword stuffing is the most serious offense in terms of title tags and you’ll be penalized for it.
Make your title (tag h1) different from the title tag: This is another opportunity to change the keyword phrase of your page and increase the chances of appearing for different search purposes.

Can Google override your title tag?

Sometimes yes. If Google doesn’t like your title tag, it recreates it for search engine results by retrieving information from your meta description and page content. It probably won’t be as good as you create, so you should make sure that your title tag is completely relevant, descriptive, keyword-rich, but readable and accurate.
